
JEAN VAN WYK
Chief Medical Officer
Jean van Wyk is the Chief Medical Officer at ViiV Healthcare, where he’s responsible for Regulatory, Safety, Medical Governance and Medical Affairs. He plays a pivotal role in shaping the company’s medical strategy and advancing medicine development for innovative HIV solutions.
Jean's journey in healthcare began as a physician in South Africa, where he developed a passion for improving health outcomes in underserved communities. This personal connection informs his work and fuels his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by those living with HIV and those who could benefit from PrEP.
From 2006, Jean worked at Abbott Laboratories and then AbbVie, where he held roles of increasing seniority in the UK, Europe and the US. He joined ViiV in 2017 as Global Medical Affairs Director, advancing to become Global Medical Lead for our foundational medicines. He assumed his most recent leadership role of VP & Global Franchise Head in 2023.
His commitment to people-centric approaches and a deep understanding of the HIV landscape enables him to effectively navigate the complexities of medical development and access. Jean is also a strong advocate for representation within the workplace, believing that varied perspectives drive better decision-making and innovation. He is dedicated to creating an environment where every team member feels empowered to contribute to ViiV’s mission.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Jean enjoys spending time with his husband and their dog and exploring the outdoors. His unwavering commitment to community service and improving health reflects his belief that together, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
