South Africa
Since 2009, Positive Action has supported a project testing the benefits of targeting interventions at boys and men.
The Ubuntu Education Fund, founded in 1999, focuses on improving educational outcomes for young people in Port Elizabeth townships. It has expanded to address the other social issues related to local educational achievement, including the high rates of HIV and AIDS. Locally, HIV prevalence is estimated at over 30%, and unemployment at 80%.
Working with boys and young men in Port Elizabeth in South Africa
This new project has combined a number of interventions to target boys and young men to challenge the way some gender roles aggravate problems of cross-generational sex, multiple concurrent partners and sexual violence and encourages responsibility in relationships.
Men are also encouraged to take responsibility for their own health to combat the problems of late HIV testing and diagnosis that prevent men accessing timely ARV treatment. All aspects of the project are integrated with Ubuntu's other services, including HIV testing and treatment referral.
